In case you weren't already familiar, as I wasn't until some BLAP friends told me about it at Coachella, I would like to introduce you to a new genre of electronic dance music: Moombahton (pronounced moom-buh-tone), generally defined as Dutch house music slowed down to 108 beats per minute--which is in the range of reggaeton's tempo.
Moombahton was created in the Fall of 2009 by American DJ/producer Dave Nada while playing at his cousin's high school skipping party--which is when someone throws a house party in the middle of the school day to dance, drink, do drugs, etc. instead of going to class. When Nada showed up to play, the kids were listening to reggaeton and Latin music, so he didn't want to mess up their groove by playing faster paced techno/house/club music. He decided to slow down "Moombah (Afrojack Remix)" by Silvio Ecomo & DJ Chuckie to 108 bpm and the party went crazy for it! Knowing that he had made a great discovery, Nada was quick to label his new genre "Moombahton" taking the title of the song "Moombah" and adding "ton" from the ending of "reggaeton."
Diplo describes it as, "A brand new sound, the child of house music and reggae music and dubstep for girls." Doesn't that sound pretty cool? Check it out!
